I guess what I'm saying, is that one option would be to:

Create a Custom Menu with Custom Links to your 'featured' posts.

Use the Custom Menu Widget to display that menu in the sidebar with a title such as 'Featured Posts'

Unfortunately, there aren't really any options that will automatically update the list for you, but since you're posting somewhat infrequently, and already manually updating dates, this might be an option.

Is there another widget that will work? That would be lovely if it can be done.
For the moment, I have decided to take the easy way out. Each time I create a new post, I will re-date the post I want to stay on top. I'm not posting that often right now, and I only want the post to stay on top for a few months.
Thanks again for your help.

Thanks raincoaster and cainm for your time and effort to help me understand. No sticky post on my static home page. Ah, well. I do appreciate the depths of your explanations.

garyives: There might be a slight bit of confusion about where a sticky post will display in the manner that you're hoping. As raincoaster has stated, and as I was trying to explain, sticky posts will display correctly wherever your main blog index is. Typically, this would be the homepage of your site, but since you have a static front page set, you would need to set a static posts page to be your blog home.

The Latest Posts widget will never follow the sticky post convention, regardless of the page on which it appears. It is only meant to display your most recent posts.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, or need more clarification. Thanks!

It cannot work on a static front page. Sticky posts ONLY work in the main blog stream page. You could unsticky the post and copy the info to a static page if you wanted, but it would then exist entirely independently of your blog posts stream.

Thanks CainM for your answer.... Questions, though.....
The "about author" is set as a static front page, but not a static post page. http://garyives.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php. So, if the Academica theme overrides the sticky post value, then setting the front page as a static page (which should in theory make the sticky note useful), and using the "latest posts" widget, (which negates the sticky post), creates a situation in which the theme code overrides the widget code again .
Am I assessing the situation correctly? If so, please help me understand what I need to do to make a sticky post work on my front staticpage. Do I change the widget? If so, what widget do I use to make my front page look essentially the same as it looks now?
Thanks for your help...

Hi there,

The "Latest Posts" widget for the Academica theme intentionally ignores the sticky post value to show your most recently written posts.

The sticky post value should work correctly on a static posts page.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I cannot seem to get the sticky post function to work in the Academica Theme. There is one post I would like to stay at the top of the posts on the right side of the front page under the title "latest posts".
I selected the sticky post option and updated the post, however, the post is not sticking.
On pages deeper into the site, I have on the left side of the page, recent posts, archives, categories and meta listed, and the sticky post does not work there either.
Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.
