@professorsx: What matters is whether it's hosted by WordPress.COM or using the WordPress.ORG software. For the sake of clarity, it does not matter what the URL of the blog ends into.

For example, I have a blog that ends in .net and, in a heartbeat, I could move it to WordPress.ORG and still use plugins.

@rfontano
The SEO here at wordpress.com is excellent. What you do as a blogger when it comes to site and content optimization both online and offline are the same no matter whether you are on a wordpress.ORG install or working on a free hosted wordpress.COM blog. The notion that having a self hosted wordpress.ORG install and uploading and using an SEO plugin will produce better SEO, than learning basic white hat SEO and applying it to a wordpress.COM blog is not born out by the evidence.

And, as you can see from this very thread, there's usually a way to do what you want without plugins. Lots of people drink the plugin Koolaid. Why not tell us what result you want and we'll tell you how to do that here.

@rfontano, read this link that timethief gave: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ .

To have plugins you will have to self-host a blog. Figure an average total monthly cost, all things considered of $10 to $25.

You will be responsible for all installations, all upgrades, all backups and all troubleshooting.

If you go self-hosted, do backups regularly and fully including the database so if something happens you can restore from the backup. Seriously, do this. I cannot stress the importance of this enough. I get called in all the time on sites that have blown up where people have not backed up anything and there is virtually no way to recover from the issue, and they lost almost everything. Backup, backup, backup.

No, Google Analytics cannot be used on WordPress.com blogs at this time.
