I tried that, but the problem is that the contributors don't show up on the User page. I know they are there because I can see them listed when I go to 'add a new user' - but they aren't showing in a place where I can actually do anything

Problem is, their names don't show up under 'users'. The only way I can see them is when I hit the 'add new user' link, and can view the list of everyone there. But on this page there is no option to change their role.
