It's not possible to manually order posts. They are automatically chronologically ordered. What you can do is to create all posts, and in the end rename the post title and add the correct number.

There are no restrictions if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities. We have hosting recommendations at the following link if you are interested.

thanks for replying...
houstonweaver: by number order i meant that i have told them to number their posts in the title box e.g. '1. Introduction', '2. sketches of magazine cover' etc...
normally I would then just sort the posts according to number / alphabetical order and then regardless of when they were uploaded they would be in the right order - that was on wordpress.org though using the custom sort plugin.
I'm not sure if this is possible on wordpress.com though.

When you say you want their posts according to Post number, is that in chronological order instead of reverse chronological order? If you want the posts in chronological order there is a kind of workaround:

If it is just to enable you to retrieve their post in chronological order, you can use this syntax in your URL to retrieve them in that way:
http://studentblogname.wordpress.com/?orderby=date&order=ASC

As an alternative, using the custom menu, you or your students can create a custom menu tab and put that same URL as the link for the tab. If you have a custom menu you can even hide the reverse chronological blog entries by having a static page as the home page and just have a tab for the chronological entries.

By default, WordPress.com blogs display posts in reverse chronological order on the home page with the latest post at the top. There isn’t a way to display posts in chronological order, but you can mark some posts as Sticky to make them appear above the other posts. They will stay at the top of your posts until you uncheck that option on the Edit screen for that post.

You can mark a post as sticky by checking the option that says “Stick this post to the front page” in the Publish settings on any post.

Hi
I'm a teacher (with a zero budget - hence why I'm using wordpress.com and not .org) and I have 11 students with blogs and some of their posts are in the wrong order. I want to order them on the blog according to number (e.g. post 1, post 2 etc) and not date.
I know there is a custom post order plug in for wordpress.org, but can't find anything / any way of doing this on wordpress.com

can anyone offer me any solution(s) here please?
