If you would like to change the header background color to red in the Retro-fitted theme, add this to your Appearance → Custom Design → CSS editor:

    background: red;
}

Adjust the color code as necessary.

I'm not completely sure what your end goal is. Are you trying to remove the header image and set a background header color in its place?

When I did that tt removed the colour of the area behind the header as well, and now I can't get it back, although I have removed the background colour from the Settings.
