If I do need to move to a self-hosted site, is there any easy way to port over the website I've built here?

No you cannot port it at all. You have to hire a web host, set upa wordpress.org install and use export/import to move the blog content.

That's correct and if you try to create dropdowns the code will not work on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

I've already signed up for pro service at wordpress.com -- I'm really disappointed to find out that I may need to move to a self-hosted option in order to do this one thing. Is this true? Is a self-hosted site my only option?
