They have been testing adsense, but that's only contextual advertising within the blog itself and certainly wouldn't produce any popups.

Can I suggest you run an anti-spyware application on your system, you may have picked up something dodgy. I had one when I was running IE that every time I clicked a link, no matter where from or to I would get a new popup. Cleared it using spybot and ad-aware in the end.
