(E.g. you might have registered it with GoDaddy, NameCheap, or another registrar.) If you did, then you are the owner of the domain and can map it using this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

If you did not purchase the domain name elsewhere, then someone else owns that domain name and you need to choose another one. You might want to check if a similar name is available, e.g. example.org or example.net.
