I understand from reading the site, specifically this - http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain - that I can redirect to wordpress. However, my goal is to permanently and forever have nothing to do with my current webhost folks (who are terrible). Is there a way for me to relinquish my old company, keep the name (www.disabilityrhetoric.com), and have my new site be in wordpress?

Put another way, I want disabilityrhetoric.wordpress.com to become http://www.disabilityrhetoric.com, but I already own the latter through la-shittay company and want to abandon them, not redirect through them. Help!
