Update
The problem is gone, apparently. But some of the hardship in formatting headings etc. remains, as reported Dec 18, 2012, 3:34 PM.
I noticed couple of days ago WordPress has a new (?) policy of replacing unwanted URLs with a link to a note about a policy regarding advertising sites. Has monkeying around with this new thing caused the problem?

WordPress monkeys should give us a direct answer, but I do not see any facility to contact them directly.

I have since cleaned up the example that I gave, so it is not a good (sic) example anymore.

This is especially annoying as I'm constantly linking to other sites (ie: Amazon).

I write my posts exclusively in the visual editor and add links by highlighting text and then clicking "insert/edit link" button. This was working until a few weeks ago.

I've tried reinstalling WordPress (I use Bluehost to host) and reinstalling all my plugins.
