That said, you can leave it as is if you are OK with having your blog at wordpress.com.
Presumably you can add the RSS feed from your blog to your main website, and thus letting people know what is going on on your blog.

I have added a subdirctory titled 'blog.gardenbeet.com' but will that work? as the isntructions are telling me I need another CNAME

If you want only to synchronize the comments, and the contents then i don't know. But if i was you then i would map the domain name to the existing wordpress.com blog, this way all gets centralised.
