Three days ago, while trying to update a post, I got an error message below the editing screen. Then I got a message saying the system was upgrading, please wait. Since then I get this message when I try to access blog (has not changed in three days)

...a clue to the problem may be that shortly before this happened, I tried to upgrade to 3.1 by clicking on the upgrade option. I actually tried this several times over the last week or so, but it failed each time. However, there were no consequences the other times...
