Most of the changes they've made recently seem to be about getting us to focus on using the WordPress.com start page.

The tags and categories we use now point only into our blogs, instead of to the Global Tag pages. So now the Global Tags are only available on the start page. In the future we will no longer subscribe to blogs via emails, but the blogs we Follow are now collected on the start page.

We no longer receive news updates on our Dashboard, but the RSS feed of the WordPress blog is on the start page. The QuickPress feature is there as well... it all seems to be an attempt at making the WordPress.com start page relevant.

Anyway, that's my theory.

Although I would prefer to keep the term 'Subscribe' (it's a connection to newspapers and magazines), for WordPress users surfing WordPress blogs the basic function of the Follow button is the same as the Subscribe button. We just go to a new place to find them.

You're not alone. Have a look at this thread:
http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/email-subscription-button?replies=84

Best to continue to post there, as this new one will otherwise (probably) be ignored.

Yesterday, suddenly and not anounced my subscriber - widget changed to a blue "Follow" - symbol.
The effect: no one gets email notifications about new posts anymore. And I don't get notifications of new entries of other blogs I've had subscribed to. Pretty sad. Does anyone WHY that happened, HOW I can get back to normal, and WHO was so bold to just invent this, change all and not even bother to let us know?
