but all that seems to show is the header slider what other slider do you mean? Do you perhaps mean the four thumbnails that appear under the slider?

To show only your four latest posts (with a Featured Image above each one, of course) in a neat grid on your home page just visit Appearance → Theme Options and click the checkbox there.

But I guess this is now irrelevant as you've switched to a different theme. :)

If the images are smaller than the size required then the slider will not display.

Featuring posts in a slider on your home page is easy. You just need sticky posts with Featured Images. Every sticky post you have (up to 10) that has a Featured Image (at least 888 pixels wide) attached will show up there. Easy!
