In what way is the free version different then the others?
I understand that I will need to find a hosting site and will most likely use one in your list. Do I set up that account first before downloading? And how difficult is it to set up and then install the auction plugin? I'm starting to think I need to find someone to help me do this.

You have to find a web host that's trustworthy, buy hosting from them, install software from wordpress.org, and then you are responsible for all updates and tech support for your own blog.
