however, if let's say i have 5 images in a gallery on an earlier post, i will not be able to reuse these same images on another gallery in a later post.

i was thinking since i've uploaded it into the media library, i should be able to re-use these images in another gallery but not able to.

[gallery]

This shortcode will produce a gallery of thumbnails arranged in rows of three. Thumbnail size is controlled in Settings > Media. You can also modify the shortcode as shown in the Support doc Jennifer linked to.

Once you upload the images from your computer and click the "save all changes" button, the Gallery tab will appear in the Image Uploader. You can then customize the settings for your Gallery before inserting it in the post or page.
