misticablog, you must have missed the many posts stating that backups are made of your blog by Matt and staff. :)

This is what's bothering me with a number of these posts. We have people coming in and seeing these posts stating that their "blog is lost" and their "work is lost" and all that. Yes, it is fanning the flames, especially since *NOTHING* has been lost and *BACKUPS* are made. That has been stated many times both here in the forums and elsewhere.

"If we haven´t got a back up of our db, we lost it??"

From drmike:
Folks, as stated before, backups are made of each and every blog. Even the spammers get their blogs backed up. Your blog is not lost. Please kindly remember that. This is the internet. Stuff like this happens all the time. (Between system admins, we call it a backhoe problem. Someone looses their internet connection due to a backhoe taking out a wire by mistake.) As stated, backups are made on a regular basis. Us oldtimes here are pretty much used to stuff like this because it happens on occasion and we have come out of it fine.

I shan't add a me too line, as its quite obvious that my blog is currently 'lost' just like everyone elses, but I take faith that backups exist. Anyways just to say that now my admin screen has gone, which has been available during the 'glitch'. I'll try and be an optimist and assume that means something is being done, that or the Easter bunny on acid that's eaten the bit of the server(s) containing our blog posts has now started on seconds/desert eating another part of the server.

kenkccc: "I uploaded an mp3 file last night (New York 16th April, 2006 12:15 a.m.). It's still there"

pictures (and all other post attachments) are should be intact since they're static, stored as a regular files in the website's box filesystem.

and this is a good news: since there's an access to them, it means (at least) there is no major *hardware* fault (harddisk) or filesystem issues.

posts' content, links, categories and other meta-data, in contrary, is contained in the database (which is probably out of sync/corrupt/whatever) and dynamically generated each time one's accesing any blog's page.

so, apparently, there's some price of not having "a rebuilding step in these days".

Classic - "if you go all wp.org on us" !

I agree, plus having the forums available so we can post concerns is really great - no matter the 'me too' count. It adds to the feeling/sense of community. Also goes a long way toward 'keeping the restless natives' at bay. :)

"I suspect I'd feel the same if I was paying for the blog space, although I might want to complain a little"

That's a wonderful argument. Would even be funny if it weren't for its tediousness.

Stonehead, your blog might mean nothing but ephemereal stuff to you but for others it might mean more. Some share their work or their passion, have regular visitors, and sometime create bonds via blogging, others might even consider that WordPress.com is (was) a perfect tool for people with no or little expertise and as the FAQ clearly stated that WP would soon offer paid services and add-ons, maybe some thought it was indeed the perfect place for a pet project.

I'm in charge of the blog here but I'm not the only one working on it and for it. And to promote it, we HIRED and PAID a company to get it boosted on bots and search engines and what people notice is the wordpress.com at the end of the URL and that's good for WP if the blog looks good and is available. To display pictures, we've paid for a p-base account. Because we believe WP is a REMARKABLE TOOL when it works, we DONATE and we donate much more than what it would cost if we paid a monthly subscription.

We're not expecting any form of privilege in a community based on volunteer work and OpenSource but frankly the "don't complain it's free" stuff is getting on many people's nerves, not just mine.

Here's a car, son, breaks down often but hey, it's free. Result: after some time, the guy dumps the car and tries another one. How many incidents like this before disappointed people move away from WP ? The efforts and the kindness of (most) people in charge is not at stake, but a free service that doesn't work is hardly a service.

I've been watching this thread with interest and while I've lost two years "work", I can't say that I'm as bothered as everyone else seems to be.

Blogging is recording ephemera - passing moments and events that quickly fade - so it's rather apt that my blog has itself proved to be ephemeral.

If it comes back, well, great and if it doesn't, well, it will be interesting deciding whether to start with a clean slate or try to reconstruct from intermittent back-ups and memories. Maybe I could ask my regulars to re-write it from their memories?

I suspect I'd feel the same if I was paying for the blog space, although I might want to complain a little. As it is, I'm sure the WordPress team are working their butts off to restore our collective works but as for me, I'm off to feed my pigs and tuck my chickens in for the night...
