I just want my own header that I had made for me by a friend.

That's doesn't require an upgrade of any kind. Provided the image is the correct dimensions go here > Appearance > Header and upload the image. If it's not the correct dimensions then resize it offline to the correct dimensions and then upload the image.

I'm sorry you are having this problem. According to the theme description the dimensions for a Minimum header are 960 x 100 pixels.

Your theme is a premium theme and we Volunteers answering questions on this forum have no knowledge of how they are designed to operate. When you purchased your premium theme what came with that purchase was support directly from the theme designer in the Premium Theme Support Forum. I wouldn't even mind using a different theme other than Matala and putting that image as the background, as long as the content is pushed to the left so you could see the image.

I feel dumb for buying the upgrade when I'm so confused, but I want my site to be different!

Many themes at WordPress.com feature an option which allows users to upload their very own custom image header. The Matala theme has such a feature - no upgrade is required to create and upload your own header of Matala 940 x 250 pixels and upload it here > Appearnce > Header
Are your referring to the blog linked to your username wearing the Matala theme? Do you have a custom design upgrade and is this a CSS editing question?
