If you are hosted for free on wp.COM then the only themes we can use are on your dashboard.
dashboard—>appearance—>themes
or here:

Note that the various paid upgrades don't mean you are able to download themes from the internet.

If you want something else, then you must find and pay a host for your site. The wp.ORG software is free.

You can not upload outside themes - it is a security and features issue - the themes here are highly modified to give you more features than a standard theme - lots and lots of extra widgets to make up for the you can't do Plug-in's here either

You should ask for a refund - you have made a common error

Do I have to purchase wordpress pro to do this? I am a complete beginner and this is so confusing.
The manual that came with the theme says I should be able to click "Appearence" and then "Install Theme" and "Upload."
