Thanks so much! I did it---just added a pic to my little text widget!
I'll check out the other themes, too, but I'm pretty attached to Misty Look because it allows a header image and its sidebar is the calmest, most inviting-looking on WP. I really want readers to use the sidebar...
Thanks again for all the help!

b) "No pretty picture": you can add images to a text widget - see here:

Ok, for now I think I found an ultra-simple solution:
there was an optional "text" widget i didn't know about!
I just put the navigation info in that and dragged it to the top of my sidebar. No pretty picture but that's no big deal. I'm happy to be rid of that clumsy sticky post with an inappropriate date on it.
I'll check out the other options as well...

This is theme specific, but in the theme you are using, the date can be hidden on the sticky post via CSS, but that would require the Custom Design Upgrade. It can't be done on all themes since some of them lump the date in with other post meta data so that it is an all or nothing sort of thing.

I just remembered something else. Note that a few themes provide another option for publishing an announcement above your posts: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/03/28/stickies-and-their-appearance/

All posts have the date embedded in the URL for the post and that cannot be changed. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-title-url/ If you wish you can switch to a theme that does not display a date above, below or beside the post. Also note you could choose to set a static page as the front page of the blog. Static pages sit outside the chronological structure of a blog and most don’t display the publication date.
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/02/18/date-on-static-pages/

If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page for your site, and also create a “blog” page for your posts to display on. Settings > Reading
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

Hope this helps.

Sorry, this must be answered in some other thread but the ones I found were all unsatisfactory, left me not understanding if this is possible.
If it's not possible, can I request it somewhere as a future (automatic) feature for posts marked "sticky"?
It is confusing to some readers---that old date a post at the top of the page throws them off and makes them think the blog's posts are in reverse chronological order. My sticky post is just some info about how to navigate the blog (i send a lot of craft students there who know nothing about blogs). I really don't like having a date on that short "intro" sticky post.
Or is there some other way than a sticky post that I can provide that info for first-time visitors?
Thanks, Ingrid
