Thanks for the feedback guys. I'd realized I'd been a bit stupid and tried to insert the code on the visual side instead of clicking on the html button.

Now, having followed 1tess's instructions and erased the previous code I've found that the two buttons are up but are in rather strange places, miles apart from each other, which looks a bit messy. See: http://aslowjourney.wordpress.com/ But as I've lost the original coding and don't know any html coding myself I'm not sure how to fix that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I was kicking myself yesterday as well timethief because I'd realized that I'd had the 'Don't publicize me on search engines' box ticked, so it's no wonder the only people seeing the site were friends. But I've rectified that and also verified my blog with the major search engines and sure enough, looking at my site stats, visitor numbers went up more than 10 x yesterday - okay that's only to 59 as opposed to 5 but it's progress :-) I'll check out the other blog catalog links you gave me but maybe now that I am getting more visitors I will just concentrate on getting the blog better before paying for publicity. Thanks!

Without doubt search engines send way more traffic to blogs than blog directories do. Just in case you haven't done this as yet, the instructions for verifying your free hosted blog with the major support engines is found here > Webmaster Tools

It's important to note that free blog directories provide very little traffic to blogs. The primary reason we blogger register our blogs in them is for the backlink. Some directories do have premium accounts and other traffic driving schemes but those are paid services. Go to the bottom of any blogcatalog.com page and note these examples of premium paid services then click the links for deatils:
Expose Yourself
Promotional Placements

My new year's resolution is to take my blog to a new level and try to get more traffic to the site for extra motivation. I've signed up with a couple of blogging websites that have approved my blog, but they want me to insert verification code into my home page, preferably on the side bar. I've cut and pasted the code and I presume it's supposed to show like a button or icon, but all I have is the code for everyone to see and the blogging sites are saying that the verification has failed.

I'm sure this is really easy but I can't find any instructions within the dashboard or through support. The website is http://www.aslowjourney.wordpress.com and you can see the code at the bottom of the home page.

Thanks in advance.
