There is a change coming to the Gallery feature that may help you out, but we don't know when it will be officially announced. Meantime check out the bottom of the Gallery support document where the "type" parameter is explained.

You can't use the Gallery feature to do this.

You can insert a thumbnail that will link to a larger image by inserting the thumbnail into an HTML table or even inserting each thumbnail and using Alignment None with a space between them, one after the other on a line, and then linking the thumbnail to the full-size image by pasting the URL of the full-size image in the Link URL field of the thumbnail image.

See here: http://agallerydemo.wordpress.com/parent-page/child-page-1/grandchild-page/ (When is a gallery not a Gallery) and http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/03/24/align-images-html-tables-for-wordpress-blogs/ and
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/04/26/images-the-three-link-options/

It definitely is more work than using the Gallery feature, but it's the only way to do what you describe.

I have created an entire pre-cropped set of thumbnails for the gallery, but couldn't find a way to link thumbnails to larger images directly in the gallery.

I have a gallery page. When I insert an actual gallery into it, where the images are different dimensions, the corresponding thumbnails are not cropped automatically, causing the thumbnails to look very jumbled.
