Meantime check out the bottom of the Gallery support document where the "type" parameter is explained.

You can insert a thumbnail that will link to a larger image by inserting the thumbnail into an HTML table or even inserting each thumbnail and using Alignment None with a space between them, one after the other on a line, and then linking the thumbnail to the full-size image by pasting the URL of the full-size image in the Link URL field of the thumbnail image.

It definitely is more work than using the Gallery feature, but it's the only way to do what you describe.

When I insert an actual gallery into it, where the images are different dimensions, the corresponding thumbnails are not cropped automatically, causing the thumbnails to look very jumbled.
