Have you purchased the css upgrade?
Without the upgrade you cannot edit the background colour of your blog or change the font throughout your blog. With the upgrade you can.

Once you know the terms you're looking for, it's basically just a bunch of scrolling to find the terms and change one colour to another. Easy.

We seem to be seeing a pattern on the forum of bloggers without css skills who are purchasing the upgrade despite the fact it's not recommended to those who have no css skills. They seem to want the professionals who occasionally drop in here to do their work for them free of charge. I find this expectation to be weird. There is no shortcut to learning css.
Mark has also listed css resources in the FAQs http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/08/15/where-can-i-find-css-customization-help/
