Well there's a little thing missing in the url when you click on the 2011 tag:
http//petersmall.wordpress.com/category/2012/

Yup, missing the ":" before //. Also, the category should be 2011 and not 2012.
If you created the tabs with the "Custom Links", don't. Your menu items are categories, so you should simply just choose from the Categories area instead. If you don't see it there, scroll all the way up and go to the Screen Options tab at the top right of the Menus page (just under your name in the user topbar) and put a check on it.
To make the tabs/menu items follow these steps: go on your dashboard menu -> Appearance -> Menus and select your custom menu with the tabs. Delete the tabs you have if you created them with Custom Links. Next, go to the Categories area -> "View All", select the categories "2012" and "2011", and "Add to Menu". Save menu, make sure the menu is activated on "Theme Locations", and that should be it.

Besides posts under categories, you can also add individual posts, posts under your tags, and posts under a certain format to your custom menu. Just check what you want on the Screen Options, and the respective areas for you to choose from should appear.

Thank you for the info. I have spent the last couple of days fooling around with it on and off and I have been able to create a new tab but, when I click on it, I get an error message. I can't figure out how to make it so that I can put posts in that tab like in other one. I am a complete novice at this, so I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

You are misunderstanding what is stated. You think a single item in a menu is the whole menu when it isn't. The menu bar can accommodate as many "items" as you wish. You can create multiple menus by using custom menu widgets. There are many common errors, misunderstanding and misconceptions when creating custom menus and you can read about them here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

The Pool demo clearly shows multiple menus. However, I can only have 1 menu. In my menus area, it stated that my theme only supports 1 menu. Do I need to upgrade to get more menus with Pool or is there a way to add them that I am missing?
