I'm preparing a page and uploaded a photo to go at the start of the page. Then after some text I want to put in a gallery of photos, but it includes the photo I used at the start; how do I keep them separate, or can't I?

You can set the number of columns for the images, and you can even set it to one column and then add a size attribute to the shortcode to have the images full-sized if you wish. You won't be able to add any text between the images though. If you want text between the images, then you would have to insert them one by one.
