Do you know if there are plans to allow for adding Authors as you can with the self hosted version anytime soon?

I know your question is addressed to TSP but I want to answer it. I have not heard of such plans and find it hard to believe that anyone would support opening this blogging platform to that spammers that would result from doing that. If you need a wiki or a forum then get a wiki or a forum, there are many free providers of the same on the internet. You can register one and link to it from your blog.

You will have to manually add them as contributors.

The P2 theme can be set so that any wordpress.COM user can post on the site right from the front page of the site without having to be a contributor, but most people I know find that a handful of trolls will discover it and post all sorts of garbage if you leave it public and open to posting.
