I know what an RSS feed is, but I don't know what it has to do with informing people of updates to your blog

The offline stand alone feed readers are too many to list but there are plenty to chose (Google "feed readers") from and generally easy to use.

Whichever way your friends decide to go they would then subscribe to your feed, then each time they called up their reader it would update with all the latest posts from your blog and whatever others they may have loaded.
