It sounds like it's not reading you as being signed in, so check that setting and clear your cache, then sign in again and see if that helps.

The sign-up process went well. However, after logging in and looking at the main http://www.wordpress.com page, almost every menu item I click does nothing. If I want to edit my profile, I get the main page - same with most others.
