Hi there,
I can help with this. Upgrading is not even on the radar when it comes to what you want. This isn't a CSS issue at all.

You can have multiple tabs for multiple menu "items" in a single custom menu. There are many common errors, misunderstandinga and misconceptions when creating custom menus and you can read about them here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

Thanks so much sixhours - that was very simple. Except now I notice that my theme only allows me to display one custom menu across the top - I wanted multiple menus (categories) to appear across the top. Grrrr! I'm tempted to upgrade to CSS but don't want to do this only to discover that this is an unchangeable element of the theme's template. Any other great ideas?

Hi @sarahlucywilliams!

It looks like you need to assign your new custom menu to the Primary Menu area. Then it will appear across the top of your site.

Thanks for your help. I did try creating a custom menu, but it still appears in the side bar instead of running across the top. Any ideas how to get it to appear at the top?

You can do the first part just by using a Custom Menu. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

The second part you will need the Custom Design upgrade for.

Hi there,

I'm not massively technical but want to have my categories appear across the top of my blog instead of pages, which is the current default.

I'd also like to removed the space between the headline and blog posts on the homepage (where the teaser is supposed to go).

Can I only make these changes by upgrading to have full control of CSS? Please help, it is driving me mental with frustration.

I'm using Forever theme and the address is:http://gardensandgetaways.wordpress.com/
