justpi, another great suggestion. I can't get over the help I have received here. Thank you all so much. I am about to bite the bullet and follow your suggestions and see what happens. I am very hopeful.

BTW #1: I was using "import" when I should have said "export."
BTW#2: I was an idiot for not realizing that really was Parker Posey. Duh.

"my understanding is that I can only upload something to my blog from another blog": that's exactly what you can't do (unless you copy that something to your computer first). Uploading means sending a copy of a file from your computer to be hosted somewhere online.

To upload files to your blog you can go to Media > Add New. After uploading each doc, copy the File URL that will show up and save it in a simple text file.

Then, one way to create links to the uploaded files is:
1) Go to Links > Add New, paste a File URL in the Web Address Field, fill in the Name field (this should be the text you want in the sidebar, add a category (this should be the title of that section of your sidebar), click Add Link; repeat for the rest of the docs, selecting the same category.
2) Go to Appearance > Widgets and drag the Links widget to Sidebar.

BTW, that is Parker Posey.

Raincoater, my understanding is that I can only upload something to my blog from another blog. I was also told that posting a Word doc is not a good idea because mobile devices won't be able to read it--and many people can't read Word docs from their computers.

I don't know how accurate any of this is because I know nothing—I'm just repeating what I've heard and read. But I will give your suggestion a go. Thanks for helping.

BTW, you look exactly like Parker Posey!

Um, actually you can do this easily.

You upload the document to the blog. It's not posted in the blog, just uploaded there. Your friend is quite right. Then in a text widget, you create whatever text and images you like and you highlight whatever it is you want to link to the document and put in the link to the document's URL.

timethief and auxclass, thanks so much to both of you for your help and suggestions. I have been talking to a techy friend who may have a workaround for me. But he suggests that I actually post all the docs in my blog so that Google can see there is common content that might be worth following.

I am SO new to this; I feel like an idiot. But little by little I will figure this out—with good suggestions and help from people like you.

do NOT want the articles posted in my blog.

Do you mean that if you have an 8 page document that all 8 pages are not text in a Post?

I just want people to see the title of a link and be able to click on it for the information.

That is a standard link thing - you can have a text that says "for more info" or highlighted text in the middle of a sentence that brings up the 8 page document - just upload the document to your media library and do a link to them - I do it all the time on my site to bring up a PDF document that is printer friendly etc.

I have many Word docs I have written that I would like links to in a sidebar--but I do NOT want the articles posted in my blog. I just want people to see the title of a link and be able to click on it for the information.

Does anyone know a way to import them the articles and just have clickable links to them?
