So, the honest and truthful thing for Automattic to do is disclose that the custom domain option only applies to the HTML URL, not the images or files therein.

Today, we were testing a WP.com site with a custom domain; the pages delivered just fine, but the images (with wp.com in the URL) were blocked.

All images uploaded on your blog are served through our content distribution network (CDN), which includes WordPress.com in the URL. Unfortunately, there's no way to change this at this time. If you don't want your images to include the wordpress.com URL, you will need to host your images manually using a third-party host, or migrate your blog to a self-hosted WordPress.org blog.

I paid the money to get my own domain, yet the images still have wordpress.com in them.
How do i fix this?
It means the images are blocked in China, and when/if i change to my own domain, all links to previous images will be dead.
Clearly not ideal
