You're seeing the error with all that HTML dump on the page in the Dashboard?

Just to be sure, did you upload a fresh .xml export file from Posterous, and did you empty your site before-hand (including empty the Trash sub-section)?

I'm trying with the new file and I'm getting this error when trying to import where I need to assign my posts to an existing user. This would normally be no problem but it's asking me to do that for almost a thousand posts and the post previews look pretty screwed up. Not sure what I should do here...

Hi there - I wanted to check in to see if you still needed any help with this. After their initial fix for accented characters didn't work consistently, Posterous made another tweak to their exporter over the weekend. You would need to generate a new export from your Posterous site. We suggest you have a look at the file first to make sure the accented characters look OK. Just let me know if you have any trouble with the import into WordPress.com. Thanks!

Posterous has let us know that the issue with accented and other non-English characters should now be fixed. You'll need to re-download your Posterous export file and try the import again.

Just let us know if you'd like us to empty out your WordPress.com site before you do. This will delete all pages, posts, comments, images and other uploaded files, as well as categories and tags. It's not reversible.

Otherwise, you can empty your site manually.

Thanks for the answers on 1 and 3.

For 2, I did some testing, and let's table it. I can't prove what I'm saying. :)

For 1 and 3, this is an idea:

In other words, create your own XML file based off all the individual post XML files. Something to explore? Maybe this would be useful for your import tools? What do you think? Should I try it?

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for getting in touch.

1. The new importer still doesn't seem to pull in the highest resolution images.

Unfortunately, this is still in the Posterous court, since the import file refers to the scaled images. We've also reached out to them, but I don't have any updates on this.

2. The in-line images seem to be of lower quality than before.

Could you please give me links to specific example posts so that I can take a look? Something to keep in mind is that in posts, images are adjusted to fit the width of the theme. Once you click through to the image attachment page, you'll see the file sized as uploaded.

3. Any characters that are Hawaiian, Japanese, or even some apostrophes, now are "???". This last issue appears to be caused by Posterous, not WordPress. But I presume this is impacting everyone WordPress is trying to pull from Posterous. I put in a support request with them, but as you know, they have no resources. Maybe you have a better solution or someone you can ping there?

We are aware of the corruption issue with some character sets (the characters seem to "break" at the point of a backup file generation) and reached out to Posterous. I will let you know as soon as we have any updates about this, thanks for your patience!

Well it looks like one issue is resolved, one isn't resolved, and two new issues showed up:

Hi Aaron,

Sorry for our delay in getting back to you. Since your original request, we’ve released a new importer that uses an export file Posterous generates, and we’ve asked Posterous to specify the original images (rather than scaled images) in the export file.

Could you please try the import again using the new instructions? Once completed, please use search to see if the scaled image paths are still used.

Please let me know how it goes and if you need further assistance!

I am still interested in moving from Posterous to WordPress, but am curious if the two issues can be resolved:

1) WordPress getting the original images.

2) Fixing where it doesn't have "See Full Gallery on Posterous" on every photo post.

The goal is to migrate fully out of Posterous and shut it down, so I do not want links back to the Posterous nor the original files there.

kathrynwp- only two issues:

1. I can't seem to find the original images on the larger ones, I can only seem to find the ones reduced down to 1000px wide. Where can I find the originals?

2. I have a link on most of the posts that says "See the full gallery on Posterous." The goal here is to be able to shut down my Posterous site completely, so I don't want those links (and want the original images available). I have over 1,500 posts, so I'm not going to manually edit them all.

Same here. It said if I don't hear within 24 hours to contact support, but instead it put me into the community forums.
