Well, that's not really the lesson to take away from this. More to the point, always be sure to save what you're working on, because you never know what might happen.

There could always be occasional random issues on our end, just as there could be issues on your end (crashes, disconnects, etc).

You might want to try the interface at Posts -> Add New in your Dashboard where you can easily save your post as you work on it.

That's interesting, Macmanx, as I've never have to do what you describe and it has always autosaved the drafts. (Except for this time, clearly!)
Anyway, lesson learned -- WordPress sometimes loses stuff and so you only write posts directly on there that you don't mind losing. I can live with that.
Thanks for all your help, y'all.

Macmanx, yes, I was on that page, and yes I saw it published, I believe -- but even if I navigated away first, that would be no reason for all autosaved drafts to be showing 0 characters?

Drafts can't auto-save until the post is either manually saved as a draft or published first. Until then, it's just text in a text field.

If publishing doesn't complete and you navigate away, the text field is cleared just like any other text field.

In the future, just make sure that you see a new screen which says "Post Published" or try the editor at Posts -> Add New in your blog's Dashboard.

annasbartel,

I'm really sorry to say that on occasion during my last 3 years of blogging I have lost whole posts worth of text.

Like you, I thought that "autosave" would be enough, even regular manual "saves" but sometimes it just happens and you loose the lot.

I still post directly in the Edit window (convience) but sometimes when I'm more organised I make all my text in a Word processing document and then copy/paste it into WP afterwards.

NOTE though, it's better to paste into the "text" part of your editor ad not the "visual "part, once it's all pasted you can update and then go to visual to check how it looks ... this stops formatting glitches etc.

If you work this way (note to self: I should more often) then you should at least have a backup copy of all your text that you can re-copy/paste should anything go wrong.

I'm really sorry that this probably isn't the good news you were hoping to hear,.... like me, your computer and all systems that work on it like WP is a little miracle most of the time, but on occasion they have a bad day and we are reminded how much we take them for granted.

Take a DEEP breath and maybe write a post about how much you hate computers (some days)... Good Luck :)

kind regards... Kiwidutch :)

Macmanx, yes, I was on that page, and yes I saw it published, I believe -- but even if I navigated away first, that would be no reason for all autosaved drafts to be showing 0 characters? This strikes me as too bizarre a problem to be my fault (though I readily concede I'm new to WordPress).
Memmelfish, how did you repost what you had written? From an autosaved draft? Or was there some other way you retrieved what you had written?

I have had the same problem -- and it's REALLY annoying, since I spent much time on that. I created it on the front page of WordPress.com, at the second URL Timethief mentions, but my blog published only the title. All revisions are blank, despite the fact that it autosaved every few minutes for the entire time I was writing. There are a million autosaves, and every one restores to 0 characters, like I never wrote anything. Useless effing crap. Is this common with WordPress? Do I need to use a different service? Or is there some brutally obvious explanation for what I'm doing wrong?

You may be able to recover an earlier post revision. Go to Posts > All Posts, hover over the title of the post, click Edit and check the Post Revisions module for previous saved versions of the post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/

If you're not seeing the Revisions module while on the editor screen, click Screen Options (top right corner of your Admin page) http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ to activate it. Then select the post and page modules to include them. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules Then you ought to be able to go here > Dashboard > All Posts > Posts and locate the post and recover it from post revisions.
