Self-resolved. Deactivating the Publicize and the Sharing modules ... both must be deactivated, not just one ... allows WOWSlider sliders to display properly.

To deactivate a module, in the JetPack dashboard, click on the "learn more" button - a new "deactivate" button will appear to its right. Click on that and module deactivates.

Additional info - deactivating JetPack restores the WOWSlider functionality, but at a loss of Jetpack functionality, of course. Re-activating JetPack 'breaks' the sliders again. Neither an image nor the shortcode displays on the page when the slider is inoperative. It is as if the slider did not exist, visually.

Jetpack 2.01 and now Jetpack 2.02 conflicting with Wow Slider (versions 2.5 and newer) - sliders (on a page) do not work. Jetpack 1.92 did not exhibit problem. An outside forum suggests that the Jetpack sharing module is a issue, and that deactivating it allows sliders to work. However, new Jetpack does not have (that I can find) an ability to deactivate the sharing module.
