I used that because you would figure being older and thus wiser, that they wouldnt flip out and argue with someone as young as I. I stated my opinions, and he stated his, while bashing mine and saying things that were not true. But thats ok, everyone sides with the forumers who are constantly on here.

Grow up for goodness sake. Stuck up snobs indeed. You sound like a character from an Enid Blyton school story. It is a fact of life that people don't always agree with you on certain issues; but it does NOT make them intelectually inferior in any way.

The people who don't see the need for guns for self defense are in denial about how dangerous the world is. And most people who don't like guns, are highly uneducated about them, for example, most of the forumers here.

People can't protect themselves against criminals who would harm them if they don't have the means to fight for their personal freedom. A criminal will not follow the law, they will do anything to break it, they will steal, they will lie, they will kill to get what they want. Gun toting, card carrying Americans aren't the issue, gangs and criminals who often promote violence and who thrive on the helplessness of others are the issue. Unfortunately until all of those criminals don't exist anymore, we need to be able to protect ourselves. Also, we need to be able to SAFELY and ACCURATELY use these weapons otherwise they can be turned on us, or used on other people. This is not and will never be a black and white issue, we have a lot of violence in the United States, and several people, myself included, refuse to be a victim of someone else's choices. That is why I carry.... to protect myself and to protect others from those who would do us harm or impede on our freedom to live. I choose to train with my weapons, so that I can accurately use them when the situation arises. Situational awareness is key in prevention of crime, but sometimes being aware isn't enough.

Firstly, congrats on the new job.
Second, to answer your questions, gun retail is a number of things.

1. in the US people are buying guns like crazy right now because of the upcoming elections. If Obama retains office, he's looking to outlaw gun purchase all together if I'm correct, or at least tighten the reigns on laws even further (which are too strict already in my honest opinion)
2. Selling guns is an easier task than one would think. Most people come in already having done research on the types of guns they would like. It's your job to hone in on a price range, a caliber, and what that weapon will be used for, ie: hunting, home protection etc...
3. tips would be to always be attentive to your customer's needs, make sure you stay familiar with the weapons because you want to be able to tell the customer details about the weapons. If you already have a strong gun knowledge then it still never hurts to keep up on current gun events and laws and merchandise. Also know your holsters, and what they fit. You want to get your customer everything they need for their new weapon. This also includes ammo types. I'm assuming you do have some gun knowledge, but I'm going to say this anyways... know the difference between full metal jacket ammunition and hollow point, what kind of ammo is more corrosive, what kind of home defense rounds will be more effective (also for those customers with children, make sure you know about the ammo that won't penetrate walls and only the perpetrator in the case of a break-in etc)

What's most important is that you do everything the right way at your local FFL dealers business, because one mess up can look bad on your company and can get you into trouble with the government. You MUST dot your i's and cross your t's in this line of work.

Also, learn fast. If you want to sell successfully, then retain that knowledge, read mags like rifleman, and check out NRA stuff.

I'm no gun guru, but I worked with a few and their knowledge was invaluable and really helped me sell the right gun to the right customer.

I think that countries with strict gun laws really struggle to understand a culture that considers owning a lethal weapon as normal. It's so alien to us.

I'd be interested to know how many deaths are attributed to legally owned guns and illegal ones, as you say.

Also, the people over here killing each other are doing it with illegal guns. Not a whole lot of law-abiding citizens taking to the streets and having Texas style shoot-outs. I've had a gun for years and I've never shot anyone. And I'm a hot-head. So, you know, that's saying something

"It's in the constitution" is a constant refrain. But that was written in a vastly different, lawless time. Just as well the UK didn't have a constitution written way back when, otherwise we'd still be burning witches.

In 2010, the number of homicides by firearms in the US was 8775. In the UK in 2009 it was 41 (can't find 2010 info, but the trend is dropping).

If this is one of the most stupid things you've ever read, you really need to expand your reading IMO. Ok, we'll agree to differ; I do not agree with blood sports of any kind. I don't think that in the 21st century people need to kill animals for food. It's barbaric and unnecessary and IMO belongs in the past when humans had no choice but to kill for food, in the same way as the wearing of fur. That was acceptable when humans didn't have any other choice but to wear animal skins for warmth. To wear fur because of fashion or to kill for food is abhorrent to me.

It's good that you've got a job in gun retail, jmcartee. Guns don't kill people, after all. People do. I don't really have any advice for you other than make sure you know what you're talking about. Otherwise people will laugh at you behind your back. But I suspect you already know about guns if you took the job.
