If I have my blog hosted outside of wordpress.org, will I still be able to enjoy the benefits of being connected to the wordpress.com community (receiving likes, etc.)?

No. WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate. WordPress.org sites are like stand alone islands. There is no "community" like there is here at WordPress.com. For clarity read > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

To be clear, people writing their own original book, movie or game reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category. I am an author and my poetry book is in post-publication. Can I post a photo of my cover and link it to amazon.com, borders.com, booksamillion.com, etc? Also, I have t-shirts that are printed through Uber Prints. Can that photo be posted and linked to their site? Or, do I need to have my blog hosted?
