In Visual mode, I enter the URL I want to link - no title, Open Link in a New Window, Add Link, and all I get is a blank/unclickable link in my post.

Exactly which step are you on here http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/#creating-links when things go wrong?

Thank you, friends, but I've already tried the two methods on my first day as a blogger. It doesn't work. There must be a catch somewhere.

Just to add to what houstonweaver provided, this is the general link model:
Highlighted anchor text here

Enter your anchor text that you want to link to first.
Then use your mouse to highlight that anchor text.
Next click the chain icon in the editor and proceed to create the link.

As you edit your post, highlight the words you want linked, click on the link tab and type in the URL you want to link to.

whenever I write a post, I cannot add links to it. why is that ?
