Prior to uploading any image into your blog, regardless if it’s a header image, a featured image, an image in a post or page, in a Post format (Gallery or Image), an image for sidebar display in an image widget or a text widget, you can optimize and re-size it in either a desktop image editing software or online image editing software to fit the space you intend to use it in. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/03/26/cropper-or-proper-image-preparation-2/

Thank you, timethief. I jumped into this whole blogging business at a point when I had no time to take the tutorials, etc., and as a result have no idea what I'm doing.

I got a photo uploaded! I followed your advice (was using IE7, so browser wasn't the problem) and deleted temporary files. Then I left the room and did some stuff in the kitchen while the upload thingy was still spinning. I don't know if it was the extra time or the empty cache that did it, but it worked. Thanks tons! The photo is very large...I definitely need to figure out how to do all of this properly!
Pam

I find this guide to be the best one for uploading images http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/04/26/images-the-three-link-options/

You can upload files in two ways: by going to Media → Add New from your dashboard or by clicking the new Add Media button right above the editing area of a page or a post.

If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

Note: If you are using an IE9 browser in compatibility mode that makes it render as IE7 and IE7 is not supported. To disable see > http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com please do these four things:

1. Try clearing your browser’s cache:

http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

2. Make sure that you have third-party cookies enabled: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/

3. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

4. Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

If it’s still happening, let us know which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://supportdetails.com and also post any error reports you get.

Hello, Timethief. Thank you for replying. Yes, I know there's nothing on it yet. I just started/created the site a couple of days ago, and got as far as trying to upload photos. I thought that would be a good place to start. But I've gone on twice now and tried to do that, and it won't work.
If I really can't get a photo on there because of a serious problem like a glitch with my computer's communication with the WordPress server, I would rather find that out sooner than later, and maybe switch to a different blogging program.
I resized my trial photo and tried again, but it still just spins and spins. I also tried my secondary trial photo again, and it also wouldn't go.

I have resized my photos, and they still won't upload. The Gravatar circle just spins and spins. I have uploaded photos to many other sites, so I know it's not my computer or my connection. How long should I be waiting for a successful upload? So far the longest I've waited is six minutes.
