For comments I used this import script. The weird thing is that, although comments got imported, the comment count still shows zero.

all the post in the hosted blog show zero comments even though they have comments in them. Weird eh?

That's what I mean: You did a good job importing e.g. the blogger-posts, and because you know how WP works it should be easy to make this working for WP, too.
So: if somebody want's move from WP.com to his own WP blog - he can do so - and if somebody wants the opposite - that's not a problem, either.

But: if sb wants to move from WP.com to XYZ.com - He still has the same problem, he had before.

I just figured this out for a friend.

Some templates don’t have an RSS feed. Just switch your theme temporarily to Regulus 2

a big mis-conception on your part. some templates don't have a link to an RSS feed, that I can accept, but not have RSS feed is just absurd!! RSS Feeds are made available by WordPress & not any template, so there is no role of template here!! also, your feed URL remains same, just append "feed/" to your blog URL, like mine is "http://itsme.wordpress.com/" & it becomes "http://itsme.wordpress.com/feed/". whatever template I have on my blog, this feed URL will work!! :)

The following does another dump. I’m not sure what that’s for.

Its for RSS 0.92 feeds. the earlier url with just "feed" at the end of it outputs RSS2 feeds.

WordPress is surprisingly basic and has disapppointed me time and again which is why I'm moving.

I guess you'll be paying for your Typepad blog, right? So why not get some server-space & a domain of yours with a webhost & host your own WordPress blog which is downloadable from WordPress.org. You'll get a lot more features in there, more than those available at WordPress.com & Typepad!! If you don't know of any webhosts, you can ask around in the forums etc. or look up at the ones mentioned on WordPress Hosting. Out of those mentioned, Dreamhost is offering a lot of space & bandwidth for very cheap, if you want to host bigger files!! :)

Anyone know how I can do this quickly and easily? Where Typepad offers 'export' options, WordPress doesn't appear to.

I just figured this out for a friend.

Some templates don’t have an RSS feed. Just switch your theme temporarily to Regulus 2

( Presentation>Themes) . That template has it as a menu option on the right side bar. But I also think it installs the files needed to use the straight links I describe below.

So for example. I just moved all the posts from:
http://blueutah.wordpress.com/ to http://www.utahblue.info/

In your adminstration panel of the source blog:
Option>Reading – Set Syndication Feeds to as many posts you want to dump. You can choose full text or summary.

Load your feed page http://blueutah.wordpress.com/feed/
At least in Mozilla, a new page comes up that starts with it comes up in a browser window. The first two lines of the page are:
<!-- generator="wordpress/MU" -->
− <rss version="2.0">

Save that page. File>Save As…Choose File type “WebPage MXL”

If the page doesn’t appear, change the theme as explained above to one that does have an RSS feature like Regulus 2

Now. Go to your new hosted website
In my case To http://www.utahblue.info/

Go into your admin panel http://www.utahblue.info/wp-admin/

Do Import – and click Import from RSS Feeds. You should get something like: (it may take awhile)

· Importing post...Done !
· Importing post...Done !
· Importing post...Post already imported
· Importing post...Post already imported

You can also import comments by doing the same routine
Load your feed page http://blueutah.wordpress.com/comments/feed/

But when you import it from Options-Reading Options as I explained above, it imports them as posts.

I have a problem that I believe is related to this topic...

I had a free WordPress blog account (alwayslookaround.wordpress.com) that I never really used. I then installed a verson of WordPress on my personal website (words.alwayslookaround.com). I've been using it without problem, until today. In the WordPress version installed on my personal website, under the "Options" tab, under "General", I changed the "WordPress address" value from "http://words.alwayslookaround.com" to "http://alwayslookaround.wordpress.com". I didn't realize it would change my website version to reference the WordPress hosted version. I immediately tried to change it back, but I get an error message that says "Sorry, you need to enable sending referrers for this feature to work.". I believe the setting I am trying to change on my website version is actually being submited to the WordPress hosted verion, hence the error. How do I fix this issue? Please help!!! I've been trying for 2 hours, and I can't figure out how to di it.

• go to http://selbstbestimmung.wordpress.com/feed in your browser
• copy and paste the code into a text editor
• save as backup.rss. or possibly backup.xml. I'm not quite sure which. Or whether it matters.

That won't back up comments, though, will it?

Maybe using the Comments RSS feed? :)

I don't know if that would be importable though. I kind of doubt it actually.

Could copy them over manually I would think. I moved over 200+ posts manually a few days ago in about an hour. (Even went and helped a student find a book too. :) )

It would be nice to have a way to export all of my wordpress.com blog's content to a local installation in the future.
