There are two different types of WordPress. While it may not be a problem for the self-hosted and self-installed WordPress.org, it's probably not allowed at WordPress.com.

Where exactly are you getting the code from?

That was what I read but it was my understanding that this button was set up so that it would not be a problem for wordpress. I do not wish to use anything inappropriate here but I am setting up a website for a non profit in town and they feel it is vitally important to have some kind of translation option on the site. If the button I have is not a viable choice no problem. But what should I do in its place? What is the best way to get the site translated for those in need?

Does part of the code include Flash, Javascript, or iframes? If so, we can't allow it here for security reasons.

Well I figured out why the button does not work but I do not know how to fix it. When I paste it in it is exactly as you typed it. But when I hit save the computer updates and strips out part of the code. Going from this:

Is there any solution to this?

Did I lose you? I have tried doing this in both a text widget and a page. The results were the same both times. A pretty button appears now but there is no actual link. Clicking on the button does nothing. I appreciate all the time you have spent helping me and thank you if you can share just a little bit more of your wisdom on this.

Alright we are getting close! I did copy the code above exactly and pasted it into the widget. It came up as the button this time but does nothing when I click on it...........

You probably have a "curly quaotes" issue. Do not change anything on the code below just copy it and paste it into a text widget.

Thank you again for all your help. Well I thought I totally understood how this worked but apparently not. I created a separate page on my blog, and pasted the code onto it. It appeared as the code does, not as a button. Then I realized I must not be in the HTML editor. So I changed to the text tab at the top right corner of the body of the page. I pasted the code in there and the exact same thing happened as when I used the text widget. The word website came up and when I clicked it I got URL not found. Forgive my ignorance but what am I doing wrong?

No I have let go of the need for the calendar as that will not work here. But the translator button is still something that is vital for this group. So that is what I am working on.

Umm, on many sources you can get a gigya shortcode for a calendar. It just won't be for the sidebar. It will only show on a post.

Paste the code here between backticks, those little marks usually on the same key as the ~ so we can read it.

PS the gigya shortcode only works on flash. Calendar code is not flash.

Great site! Thank you for the lead! However, I need your help.....I cannot get it to work. I don't know if is that my quotes are still curly or what. I got a text widget and copied and pasted the button right in exactly as you show it. I even went back through and changed the quotes once even though they looked exactly the same when I did it.
Can you help me troubleshoot this?

I have been here for over 6 years and if a gigya shortcode workaround could be used for either an event calendar or for the translation widget I would have posted that.

You could use the gigya src shortcode which basically is like a way to get around the restrictions that WordPress allows on plug-ins. Like for players and audio and such.

There is no upgrade you can purchase that provides the ability to embed an events calendar of use the Google translation widget or any other JavaScript widget or iframe. There is no upgrade that changes anything stated here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ or here http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

We can set only one interface language here > Settings > General for our blogs.

Google translation widgets are Javascript and it's stripped out to preserve security on this mutiuser blogging platform. http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

There is no FTP access and we cannot install plugins because this is a multiuser blogging platform ie. our blogs are not free standing and there are security issues that would arise if that access were allowed.

And can you tell me if the calendar issue could be solved by upgrading, what upgrade would we need and how difficult would it be for the layman to use said calendar. I really do appreciate your help!

There is no event calendar that we can embed into a free hosted WordPress.com blogs because they are all dynamic and we cannot use JavaScript for security reasons.

Thank you for all your help, this is working out very well and the nonprofit is pleased at the new site. But I do have another question......they are really big on the idea of a calendar. Not like the calendar offered in the widgets that is a calendar of posts, but instead a calendar that they can put events that they and other nonprofits in the area are hosting, like fund raisers and etc. I am not sure how to solve that problem for them and there may not be an answer through wordpress because they want to incorporate so many calendars across the region, etc. But I do want to cover my bases and reach out to a larger group of wp users to see how others have solved the problem. Suggestions are very welcome from all, you have all been so helpful already!!!!!!
