None of them have accounts. So when they create an account, it's OK for them to ignore the part about creating a new blog? It seems to imply that it's part of the sign-up process . . .

Does this help?
http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

They will need to click the “Accept Invitation” button in the invitation email. If they are logged into their WordPress.com account, they will be taken directly to your blog. If not, they will be taken to the log-in screen, where they can either log in or create a new user account.

Note that users who create a new WordPress.com account at that point will still need to return to the invitation email and click the “Accept Invitation” button after doing so. http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/#invite-people-to-view-your-private-blog

I am having a similar problem. My students are being asked to create a new blog, which they do not want or need at this time, since I have invited them to be authors on my blog, http://differentiationmbti.wordpress.com

What do I do now?

I have invited my students to be authors on a class blog. Many find they cannot sign up for a username because WordPress says they do not have permission or the username does not exist, etc. Of course the username does not exist as it is being created, and the permissions statement seems strange.

What can I do?

Some students signed up as Readers and I would like to make them authors. How do I do this? I tried inviting them with their newly created usernames, but WordPress said no such usernames existed. What?

Help
