Ranking by Links is BROKEN - totally and completely broken.

Ranking by Traffic works properly but has one known but/defect.

Proof of the broken-ness of the TLB link counting process is easy. One particular blog I know for sure to have 900+ links, more than 300 of them being front page links and over 200 of those being listed in the TLB ecosystem.

TLB link count is 42. (should be 200+)

Technorati link count is 900+

MSN link count is 3400+

Msn counts all links, Technorati counts Blog links, TLB does not count properly ... hence ... BROKEN.

Any fool can put up a post called "Britney Spears Beaver shots" or "Saddam Hussein's execution video" and get a billion hits, but A) what kind of crowd does that draw, B) what does that mean if not one of them saw fit to refer back to the post or the blog at all? To me, high traffic and low links mean a bait and switch, or that whatever you're featuring is something people want to see voyeuristically but don't want to be caught looking at. Naturally, pornsites boast high pageviews and low linkage.

It is not even due to right wing versus left but due to defects and bugs in the ranking system.

The ranking by links is completely bogus and should only be used as a rough guideline.

Ranking by traffic, however, is quite accurate since it is based on the actual sitemeter.com stat counter results.

The major bug/defect with the traffic ranking on TLB is that it is able to be gamed by some people who use the same sitemeter code on dozens of sites and that results in several dozen of their sites showing up in the same poace in the results witht he exact same traffic numbers. It is pretty obvious ... see numbers 20 to 34 in the current ranks by traffic ... they are all the same code.

All of the ranking systems have flaws, but among them all I find Google and Technorati to be pretty fair. TLB is interesting, but it's vastly overpopulated by the right wing, so it gives them higher results, as they're more networked within TLB. Very, very few of my links show up there, alas, and it seems a bit glitchy: at one time I was a crunchy crustacean, and now I'm just a microbe. Obvs, this isn't going to be my favorite metric!

The reason I like Google and Technorati, glitchy and juddering as they are (they seem to update once every six weeks or full moon or whenever the tech has her period, or god knows when) is that they count links to your blog from other people, and that's what ranks you. In other words, someone has thought what you said worthy of referencing, ie they acknowledge your authority in some way. Your post has value to them. Metrics which take that into account, the fact that your post has actually influenced someone to do something, if only to point to it, are irreplaceable measures of our influence in the blogosphere, and that's why I like them.

Give me one person I've influenced over a hundred I've merely encountered. Pageviews mean virtually nothing to me.

Cut us some slack: Canadians on drugs are virtually unstoppable once we get going.

Must be why they're so cheap. :)

One thing that comes to mind is that you can get stats and numbers to say anything that you want.

I'd love to know where that list came from.

I actually think Robert is a great guy and a wonderful resource.

Whining, perhaps a bit.

Back onto the sub-topic of how to tell who is most popular, there is an excellent resource for that.

Technorati is only based on links from other blogs that are listed in technorati.

The TLB ecosystem is only based on links from other blogs in the ecosystem to blogs in the ecosystem and only counts links from the front page.

Alexa is very flawed since it is based only on users of the Alexa toolbar and since Alexa has been tagged by all the major spyware vendors as spyware, it gets worse over time.

There is actual data available for a price from a company that collects the traffic data from ISPs and provides it for a fee to market research companies and media companies.

The best free resource is the TLB traffic data since it is based on actual stat counts from sites that participate and use public sitemeter.com statistics to display their stats.

The problem with that method is that not everyone participates so you only get results for those who are included.

Robert Scoble's blog is listed as being ranked #2308 on TLB based on links but is not ranked for traffic.

Below are the top 20 Blogs listed by traffic.

I have no idea where Robert's traffic is within that range but if he is #39 based on traffic, that would put him at over 100,000 visits per day and just below Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit.

What really put me over the edge was howling like a coyote, until I had all the neighbouring dogs howling too. I couldn't help myself. After going through three gales and a snowstorm that all took down the power lines, access to water, road blockages, live wires, etc. shivering in the dark, without my computer ....OY! ... for days. I felt like an animal.

You could say I shape-shifted, howled {howling is infectious, no?) and others joined me. {No one grew any excess body hair or fangs or anything ... not that I noticed ... everyone had a great time.} ;)

oh, oh ... here comes the hook ...

This has got to be the last of our chat on the support forum. We are putting our Support Maven, Mark, who is on staff and our volunteer Moderator, drmike in an uncomfortable position.
