I have added an empty text widget to the last of my widget areas and still all the right hand menu items are below all the posts. On the pages however the menu is in the correct place.

I just realised that WP is forcing infinite scroll on many layouts site-wide. This is really exasperating. I have many blogs here, some with thousands of entries in total, but due to thi feature, I believe we will all be leaving. I do not know who thought this would be a good idea, but it is not, and telling people to change layouts and use a work around just to get a reasonable number of entries on a page is ridiculous. I used to think Blogspot was bad. heh.

With so many negative feelings about infinite scroll, it would seem to me that the better design would be to make it an option somewhere. Let the blog owner ... or maybe even the reader ... make the choice.

While personally, I like the infinite scroll, there is stuff at the bottom of pages (like own, at least for now) that I'd like to get at. Are those things moved to the top? Of course, not matter what is changed, I'm sure someone will hate it. That's why I think options are a good thing. Make it harder to hate (because you'd have to hate the option).

I am starting to get confused - sorry - but think I understand now...
As far as I understood Mistylook had not got footer widgets. I plan to eventually try to find a theme that has them. Any suggestions would be gratefully received of ones with footer widgets and a single sidebar (and which will let me choose to add my own image at the top).

Sorry, Timethief, I didn't realize that option appears only if you have footer widgets. I'm not using any footer widgets on mine, but I might have had one at the time I turned off infinite scrolling.

When I get some time I will look into another theme, unless WP come to their senses in the meantime!

I hope you understand this is a site wide change. Staff will be implementing infinite scroll on all themes that are suitablly structured to accomodate it. The only workaround for disabling it provided thus far is only appicable to themes that have footer widgets.

They added the option to turn off infinite scroll on the Twenty Eleven theme. You can find it under Settings/Reading. When you turn it off, you can then set the number of blog posts you wish to appear on the front page.

Sorry timethief. Perhaps I have not used the right terminology. I have a sidebar on Mistylook with text widgets but understand that I cannot turn off this scrolling using the theme. It would be interesting to know of any themes could I consider changing to that are similar (with just one sidebar) but also let me use the widget I need to turn off the scrolling.

You select a theme that has footer widget areas. You install an empty text widget into any footer area for widgets on that theme > Apearance > Widgets. Once you have done that your number of posts set on the Settings > Reading page will prevail.

What I would really like is to add my dismay to the long list at

... and to ask WP to make this an option rather than imposing it on everyone, especially those of us who cannot turn it off!
Your long list is very helpful, but I am not sure which ones with one sidebar have the widget I need to add that turns this off - and I am also concerned about losing data as I transfer.

Oh dear. I thought that might be the case as I have never seen any reference to footer widgets on my dashboard page. I will see how I get on otherwise I suppose the only option would be to change theme.

No, you cannot turn off infinite scroll on Misty Look.

That theme has no footer widgets.

On a theme that does have footer widgets, you could insert a widget on the bottom (even just an empty text widget) so you could again control the number of posts viewable on a page.

I think this post might answer my current problem too. I am using Mistylook. Under Settings > Reading I have set 'Syndication feeds show the most recent 10 posts'
but recently on going back through posts using either 'older' or pasting in a URL such as http://hopeeternal.wordpress.com/page/10/
I get just 7 posts from 2009 before it jumps forward to posts that are much more recent (the earliest is always 11 Nov 2011 although there have been more later than that date that do not appear).
Is this what you mean by infinite scroll? Posts certainly continue to appear when I drag the bar down.
Is there any way in Mistylook I can turn this off, please.
I am not much of a techie so simple explanations would be welcomed!!

well, that did help. I am using the twenty eleven theme. I set it for 3 posts to be shown but it shows seven for some reason. thoughts?

Staff have introduced “infinite scroll” to some themes and will be implementing it on all themes that have a suitable structure for infinite scroll. This is a site wide change.

If you have a theme with footer widgets all you need to do is install an empty text widget into any footer area for widgets. Once you have done that your number of posts set on the Settings > Reading page will prevail.

If you have a theme with footer widgets then you can switch to a theme with footer widgets so then you will be able to drop an empty text widget into a single footer widget area. Then you can regain control of how many posts display on the front page of the blog and the number you enter on Settings > Reading page will prevail..

I want to make it so only the 3 or 5 most recent posts show up and the rest are archived, can't seem to figure out how to do so. thanks!
