When you remove all the widgets, the theme defaults to the basic ones (categories, meta, etc). Once you begin to add the ones you want, they default themes go invisible.

I guess the developer didn't want anyone to have blank sidebars... ?

Someone said it had been fixed, but I'm experiencing the same issue. 'Categories', 'Meta', 'Recent Posts', none can be removed from the sidebars...
