Wow, it seems Ms Timethief is working overtime on this one! O, and, by the way, I am a religious nut, which I take as a compliment, but I will not admit to being a liar, Mr Justpi, okay. Yer, I know a 'business malpractice' claim resulting in the closure of WordPress and millions of dollars awarded to the claimant is pretty scary stuff - but don't worry, folks, I'm thousands of miles away in India (but British nonetheless) so I won't be banging on your door anytime soon. Anyway, it either looks like a lot of extra work for me to rectify this problem which began, I assure you, only yesterday or being forced to upgrade which I'm not planning on doing. AGP, 15th Dec 2012.

suddenly someone has changed my links to permanent orange

Sorry, you're wrong. I save the stylesheet of each theme as soon as it's launched, so I can assure you that links in Wu Wei were always orange (color #ff8a00, to be precise).

If you want to change the link color in the content of your posts, you can do it without the upgrade - it just has to be done on a link-by-link basis; see here:

Also, link should open in separate window not same window to avoid serious display problems.

This is guide for creating links in blog posts and pages and it does sound like you are following it.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/
This is the general link model:

Highlighted anchor text here

This is the visual result but as it's just an example it's not actually linked to a page:
Highlighted anchor text here

1. Enter the anchor text you want to link to first.
2. Then use your mouse to highlight that anchor text.
3. Next click the chain icon in the Visual editor and proceed to create the link. Note that you can choose to have the link open in a new window.

Go here to the WuWei theme live demo site http://wuweidemo.wordpress.com/
Look closely and witness the fact that links in that theme are orange in color when you choose the light background color. If you choose the dark background color here > Theme Options then the links are pale blue in color.

Lastly, I am a Volunteer, who also happens to be a paralegal and your "business malpractice" claim is not in any way, shape or form relevant to your situation as a free hosted blogger. It's laughable as it amounts to sabre rattling.

My Dear Ms Timethief, You do spend a lot of time answering people's questions, but appear not to be an employee of WordPress or maybe you're their relation. Okay, its business malpractice to try and force free members to upgrade to get their colour back to normal. I've always posted in black and now suddenly someone has changed my links to permanent orange. I appreciate the free service, but this is an obvious case of business malpractice. AGP, 14th Dec 2012.

My text is always in black and I want it to stay that way. However, some bright spark has changed all links to permanent orange which totally distracts the reader from the rest of the text. However, I don't mind if its permanently black, but changes to orange temporarily when link is activated. This is acceptable, but permanent orange is atrocious! Also, link should open in separate window not same window to avoid serious display problems. May the Force be with you. AGP, 14th Dec 2012.
