But i prefer to keep the category menu on the right bar, but the links and others at the footer.
To control the length of the home pages of the blog you can use the <!-- more --> tag : http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/
Also to break the post into pages use the <!-- nextpage --> tag : http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/nextpage/

Because if it is displayed at the bottom, people who get bored by the first post may move away from the blog, giving them no option to view other posts. The scene is different if those options are displayed in the right column.
Moreover a two column layout would suffice and is visually pleasing.
