If the blog is public but you set a static page to private, the page can be seen only by you (or others who have access to your dashboard) when logged in; if you make the page password protected instead of private, the page can be seen only by those who have the password. b) There's no such thing as "not having a theme". "Is that it?" No: you can always go to Appearance > Themes and activate a different theme.

If I make the blog pages private so only the users I invite can see them is that two different things? I don't want everyone who uses WordPress to see them, just whom I invite. So do I then leave the blog as public or do I set it to private? I set it to private but then the pages disappear from the menu.
2. Can I go back to not having a them and just have it be the original or once I click on a them to be activated is that it? Please advise.
