In my opinion the way you dealt with it *is* the best way. It sounds like it was an accidental glitch in the underlying code, so the best way to get something like this resolved, is be to let us know about it :)

Problem: I'm using the featured posts widget. Unfortunately, when I insert a featured image it shows up with the inserted photo; or, when I insert only a featured image (no inserted image), the featured image doesn't show up when I click on the featured post.

The featured posts are set as excerpts. And, as you indicate, the five most recent posts should appear. However, this suddenly changed on its own and now the widget indicates that up to 25 excerpts will appear in the sidebar, which is happening. And that essentially is the problem.
