britgirl, thank you very much. I had searched and searched. I found pretty much what I thought I needed to do the job EXCEPT your detailed instructions re: text ecitor, clicking on widget, etc.
I even got some html in after a few tries. It all comes back after a while :).
Thank you again.

Open notepad - text editor, create your text and/or links that you want in the widget.
Go to your dashboard,>presentation> sidebar widget, drag one saying text(number) to your sidebar. Click on the icon to open the widget, copy and paste your text from notepad into the widget (you might have to scroll up when you click on the Widget to see it open, but you will know it is open beacuse the rest of the screen goes dark).

close the widget by clicking on the close button in the top righthand corner.
Click on update changes (You MUST remember to do this or nothing will be saved).
Wait for the message saying sidebar updated and click on view site link when it appears.
You should see your widget in your sidebar.
Repeat for as many widgets as you need. You can also drag the widgets to the position in which you want them to appear in your sidebar. Since you are doing a to inform visitors you're moving, I'd put it at the top.
Check the FAQ for any more details.

"A test widget with a link is also a good idea if your sidebar shows up on every Post."
I've found the page where I can drag a widget into a box and it appeare in my sidebar.
The problem is I don't know how to create a widget (text I assume for this purpose).
Can someone explain this for me.
My theme is Kubrick. I think this is OK for widgeting in the sidebar.
Thanks

Changing your theme would fix that.

Drmike, thanks. I suppose I should understand what you suggest, but I don't.

"Add a link in your last post on your old site to your new one."
What would the link say/do?

"A test widget with a link is also a good idea if your sidebar shows up on every Post."
I've heard the term widget, but I know not what they do or how to make them.
My sidebar (I guess -- lists categories, etc.) shows up on the HOME page of the blog, but not if you select individual pages.

Thanks for your patience with persons such as myself:).
