I tried to register a domain (qcwriters.com), but I get a message saying that this doesn't map to a worpress domain or something and that maybe somebody already owns it. I'm so confused! Should I have put the existing domain (qcwriters.wordpress.com) in the "add a domain" box? The instructions are really hard to understand, at least for someone who doesn't already know how to do these things.

So, just to follow up: in order to register my domain, would I go to Store and then Domain and then to "Add Domain"? And here would I enter qcwriters.com in order to claim that as my address for the site? Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks for the reply. I wish I understood it! My blog is
http://www.qcwriters.wordpess.com
. I'm trying to figure out how to change the address of this existing site so that it doesn't include "wordpress.com" but just reads qcwriters.com. Maybe you answered how to do that above, but I'm not enough of an insider to recognize where or how you might have answered that...

Your username is linked to the home page of WordPress.com. We Volunteers answering support questions here on the forum that’s only for free hosted WordPress.com bloggers cannot assist any blogger who does not provide an active link starting with http:// to the blog, post or page in question. Please do that now.

What if I want to change the address for my existing wp site? By registering and mapping a domain, will I get the end result I want?

I have domain mapping on two of my blogs and the answer to this question above is "yes". One does not have to move their blog off free hosting here at WordPress.com when they purchase a domain.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/
http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/

When we purchase domain mapping it is so that all the URLs from the .wordpress.com root blog when clicked anywhere on the internet will seamlessly redirect to the same content in the post under the new domain URLs.

The pagerank and authority the blog earned was earned by the .wordpress.com URLs and belongs to them. It’s not transferable. so what that means is the domain starts from zero. In about 4 – 6 months time the content will all be re-indexed by search engines under the domain URLs and all things being equal the blog will probably have the same pagerank and authority it had prior to purchasing domain mapping. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/

If you choose to move your blog onto a WordPress.org install one day this is easily done. If you’ve registered your domain through WordPress.com and now want it to point to a blog or website hosted elsewhere then you can do this by updating the nameservers. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#update-nameservers

I have a blog on wordpress at this address: qcwriters.wordpress.com. I want to get rid of the "wordpress" in the address so that the address is just qcwriters.com. I've been reading through the info about registering and mapping a domain, but I'm confused by the descriptions there. They seem to be addressing the process for registering a blog hosted somewhere other than wp. What if I want to change the address for my existing wp site? By registering and mapping a domain, will I get the end result I want? I don't really understand what "mapping" means...just confused.
